Spam. While it may just be a four letter word, none of us like it. You may not receive it, but beware, for next time you order something online the spam could just be waiting to send! While sometimes it is impossible to stop spam, there are a few things to greatly reduce the amount you get. I used to get 20-30 spam emails a day, and now I'm down to about 2 or 3.
Here is what you can do:
1. By law, all solicitation or subscription emails are required to have an unsubscribe link somewhere on the message. While not all spam has this, most does, and it can prove very useful. Some people will tell you not to click on it, because it is only telling the spammers that yours is a real email address so they can send more, which is true, but in my experience I have unsubscribed from every one of these emails.
2. If you have spam pretending not to be spam or that just doesn't have an unsubscribe link on the botton, forward it to spam@uce.gov. This email address is owned by the government, and while they won't resolve individual problems, they will try and find illegal spammers and stop them.
3. Visit http://www.ftc.gov/spam/ and look around there. This is the official government spam website, run by the FTC. They have all kinds of tips to stop and reduce spam, along with other spam information. Also, as you might read on their website, there is no such thing as a national DO NOT EMAIL registry! There is a national do not call registry, run by the government, (https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx), but even though many sites claim to have one, there isn't a do not email registry!
Even if you don't geet spam right now, you may receive it in the future, so be careful and good luck eliminating spam!
